Aaron Spelling insisted that he could tell if someone had star power the moment they walked into the audition room. But what if there is no audition room? What if the world is digital? and fragmented? and changing at a pace no one, not even a broadcast network or a major studio has ever dealt with before ? What if the world is the one we live in?
showbizzle truly came of age the moment we posted our first casting notice on Actor's Access. The listing said we were looking to find a new character for our next season. By the end of the day we had 4000 submissions -- 4000 submissions to a digital series that probably very few had ever heard of -- which affirmed in our minds that the young creative community in this town is searching for opportunity, creative expression, recognition -- and the chance to work and get paid and have fun.
We published 10 original monologues for the audition.
175 of you submitted video audition pieces.
25 of you have been selected as finalists.
5 were voted in by the membership.
and the other 20 were the ones we thought deserved a second look.
The majority of our finalists performed "Stalking Jason Segel" by Lindsey Rosin and the timely "I Can't Get A Job" by Stacey Lloyd. Thom Guillou, who plays the sketchy writer/director Luke, wrote three different monologues that are represented in the finals while Heather Thompson, who also wrote and performed in the first season, wrote the two others. My monologue for Dash, the scammer who works at a pot dispensary, didn't make the final cut -- so if anyone wants to humor me and post your interpretation on the community channel, I promise to watch and comment.
I watched all 175 entries. As you might expect, there was a wide range of execution in terms of performance and technical delivery -- but being back in the "audition room" watching talented actors bring these funny characters to life was a total blast and a needed reminder as to why we gravitated to the creative side of the room to begin with.
